Avon Fire & Rescue Service and London Fire Brigade worked together with Rio Learn in 2019 to develop an e-learning module about the environmental issues at Fire & Rescue Service sites.
Our aim was to establish a basic understanding amongst all staff of environmental issues and legislation relevant to fire service sites, so they are able to help our organisations comply with relevant legislation and embed environmental best practice in the day-to-day management of our stations. Although the module ‘Fire & Rescue: Environment Matters’ is not designed to provide operational guidance, many of the underlying imperatives and principles of environmental protection are the same.

The development of the module was a good opportunity for collaboration & a demonstration of leadership across the sector, and was endorsed by the NFCC and FBU, and was developed with support from the Environment Agency. The module is mandatory for all staff at both AF&RS and LFB, and included in the induction programme for new staff. It is being used by a range of services, with Kent FRS currently in the process of rolling it out.
Content
The module takes staff on an interactive journey through a fictitious station ‘Green Bridge Fire Station’, looking at energy, waste, water and well-being in different areas of the station and how these can be addressed including:
- Using the right drains for vehicle washing
- Best practice for hazardous waste
- Use of depolluted scrap cars for training
- Energy efficiency measures
